Matthew wants us to be struck by a remarkable contrast in Matthew 26:6-16. A woman anoints Jesus with an expensive perfume; Judas Iscariot bargains to betray Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. Valued at over 300 denarii (Mark 14:5), the woman's perfume is worth over a year's wages for an average worker. The value of Judas' silver? Four months wage.
What a remarkable contrast:
Tender affection vs. callous indifference.
Unrestrained generosity vs. calculating greed.
Broken-hearted love vs. hard-hearted pride.
And Jesus' assessment of the woman's act of beauty? "She has done a beautiful thing to me." (Matt 26:10)
